El 4 de julio de 2025, el pueblo de Kerrville, situado en Texas, declaró oficialmente un estado de desastre tras sufrir el impacto de una serie de inundaciones provocadas por un sistema de tormentas. Esta localidad, reconocida por su cercanía con el río Guadalupe y su valor cultural y natural, experimentó una emergencia sin precedentes que aún mantiene movilizados a servicios de rescate, autoridades locales y estatales, así como a voluntarios.
El antes y después de Kerrville, el pequeño pueblo devastado por las inundaciones
La ciudad se encuentra a poco más de una hora de San Antonio y forma parte del condado de Kerr. En condiciones normales, sus paisajes naturales, campamentos de verano y celebraciones culturales la convierten en un destino elegido por residentes y visitantes. "Un paraíso en la región montañosa", se describe en su sitio web oficial. Sin embargo, esa imagen cambió radicalmente tras la crecida del río Guadalupe.
Desde la madrugada del viernes, lluvias persistentes y de intensidad inusual comenzaron a saturar el terreno. La acumulación de agua provocó que el mismo río se desbordara y causara desplazamientos de estructuras y vehículos, lo que dejó a decenas de personas atrapadas.
El impacto de la emergencia en Kerrville y su comunidad
Uno de los lugares más afectados fue Camp Mystic, un conocido campamento de verano donde se reportó la desaparición de 20 niñas y aún se mantiene su búsqueda de algunas de ellas. Las autoridades confirmaron que han sido recuperados 68 cuerpos sin vida, incluidos 28 menores de edad.
"Seguimos ofreciendo nuestras condolencias a los afectados y trabajamos incansablemente para reunir a las familias", publicó en Facebook la Oficina del Sheriff de Kerr: "Sabemos que hay muchas personas preocupadas y afectadas por esta trágica situación".
La comunidad local respondió a esta crisis con apoyo conjunto. Tanto residentes como visitantes se organizaron para colaborar con recursos, transporte, alimentos y asistencia emocional. Desde los equipos de rescate oficiales hasta civiles con botes propios, todos contribuyen en las operaciones, según relató el periodista Humberto García a CNN.

Desde la orilla del río Guadalupe, el periodista le describió a CNN la escena como una zona completamente transformada. Árboles caídos, restos de estructuras y un silencio interrumpido por las operaciones de rescate son parte del paisaje actual. "El dolor, lo que se vive aquí, es realmente, como lo ha descrito el gobernador Greg Abbott, horrible", aseguró.
Residentes como Robert Brake compartieron sus vivencias. "Lucas, mi hermano necesitaba ayuda. En ese momento, no nos dimos cuenta de la magnitud de lo que estaba pasando, apenas logró escapar con vida, junto con su esposa", recordó, pero sus padres aún continúan desaparecidos.
Ryan Logue, un miembro de la Organización de Búsqueda de Víctimas de las Inundaciones, expresó el profundo impacto que vivió Kerrville. "Esta es nuestra comunidad, es nuestro hogar y está destruido", aseguró: "Esa gente que tiene niños en el campamento no se imaginan el dolor que sienten".
Otro testimonio vino de una familia que se alojaba en un alquiler turístico. "En cuanto me despertaron, entré en modo de acción inmediata. Me aseguré de que todos estuvieran bien. Lo que parecieron dos minutos, en realidad fueron dos horas de sufrimiento", relató Ricky González.
Condiciones meteorológicas extremas y saturación del suelo en Texas
El sistema de tormentas que desencadenó la emergencia fue especialmente severo por su duración y volumen de agua. En pocas horas se registraron acumulados equivalentes a cuatro meses de lluvia. Algunas zonas reportaron más de 38 centímetros de precipitación en un solo día.

Felipe Orduña Torres y Armando González Ortega, dos traficantes de personas, fueron sentenciados hoy a prisión de por vida y 83 años, respectivamente, por su papel en la tragedia de San Antonio, Texas, en 2022, donde 53 personas murieron, entre ellas niños, tras ser abandonadas en un tráiler contenedor.
De acuerdo con el Departamento de Justicia, el juez de distrito Orlando García también impuso una multa de 250 mil dólares —unos cinco millones de pesos— a cada uno de los acusados, luego de que en marzo pasado ambos fueran encontrados culpables tras un juicio, con varios cargos por transporte de migrantes.
Según la investigación que realizaron diversas agencias migratorias y de seguridad, Orduña Torres, alias Cholo, de 30 años, era el líder y organizador de la operación que terminó con el abandono de los migrantes en el tractocamión que fue dejado en medio del verano tejano, el 27 de junio de 2022.
